MY LITTLE PART OF AUSTRALIA [Australia Day Book Giveaway Blog Hop!]
I’m excited to be part of the Book’d Out Australia Day Blog Hop! I, along with many other Australian bloggers and authors are running giveaways between Jan 25th and Jan 28th to celebrate Australia and the Australian writing community, so be sure to check out all the other blogs participating too – you could win lots of prizes! I’m giving away a $20 Amazon gift voucher and an ebook copy of my short story SISTERS AT HEART, a heartwarming tale set in the small Australian town of Tarrin’s Bay (fictional, but based on where I live… read more about that below).
MY LITTLE PART OF AUSTRALIA:
I moved from the mountains to the sea two years ago, and in a way, I feel like I’m on holidays ALL THE TIME. Not that I sit about relaxing all day – far from it! – but the location, my surroundings, the atmosphere, it has that magical holiday feel.
I live in a town called Kiama on the south coast of New South Wales. Every morning I step out on my balcony and gaze at the ocean, watching the waves crash against the headland and breathing in the fresh, salty air. I love it. And I love the surrounding towns too.
Here are some other things I love about my little part of Australia…
~ The people – Everyone is so friendly, from the stranger saying hello while out walking to the customer service with a smile at one of the many shops. There’s a real sense of community spirit and united appreciation for this beautiful place.
~ The landscape – We are lucky to have both a scenic coastline with beautiful beaches and also a vast rural landscape of lush green hills and farmland. It’s country and coast combined. Many tourists come to visit our two popular blowholes and stand by with cameras at the ready to capture the sudden, huge splurge of water shooting through the rocks from the ocean below.
~ The climate – Although we get some really cold days in winter and some really hot days in summer (45°C last week!), most of the time the weather sits in the perfect early to mid 20’s. I love that it’s not usually as hot as up north and I love that it’s not as cold as the mountains where I used to live (and needed gloves, thermals, two pairs of socks, and a heavy layer of blankets that required super human strength to lift off in the morning!). It’s a nice ‘in-between’ type of climate.
~ The best of both worlds – Being the first country town south of Sydney, it has that homely small town feel – no high rises, no major shopping centres, no McDonald’s…etc, while still offering all the conveniences of modern society.
~ The events – There is always something to do, especially on weekends (Kiama is a popular tourist destination – it is packed in January!). The seaside markets are always popular… I love strolling around the harbour and looking at all the arts, crafts, jewellery, books, food, and other interesting finds while watching the sunlight shimmer on the ocean. There are jazz festivals, arts festivals, surfing competitions, a local show with fireworks, New Years Eve celebrations, and a wonderful Christmas carols in the park each year.
Have I convinced you to move here yet? If there’s no chance of that you can still enjoy this special place through my upcoming series of novels set in the fictional town of Tarrin’s Bay, which I’ve based on Kiama and other surrounding towns. Watch this space! And you can read a bit about this series on my ‘books’ page. Remember to subscribe to the blog to keep updated on news.

I love the weather and the gorgeous beaches – not that I get a chance to go there much!!
I love the weather and the awesome (and often a bit scary) wildlife that we have.
I love that its a land of contrasts – from the rainforest to the beach to the outback – something for everyone.
Lovely blog, Juliet. Happy Blog Hopping.
I would like to see the inside of the Opera House that so many people have photographed. It would be great to see the animals on their native land.
Ditto Jenn:) I love Australia because of its fabulous fiction and its very lovely writers:)
Thank you for offering this giveaway Juliet, I hope you have a lovely Aus Day weekend! I’m actually planning to head down to Kiama over the weekend for a swim 🙂
What do I love about Australia? The weather, the laid-back attitude, the openess to new experiences and of course our lovely beaches, countryside and chic cities!
I think we live in an incredible country – it offers gorgeous varied landscapes, unique wildlife, and freedom
Thanks for the giveaway!
I used to live not too far away from Kiama in Vincentia. I always loved those windy roads in Kiama (and the Ice Creamery ad on tv was forever stuck in my head “The Ice Creamery, the Ice Creamery…Kiama! Ah ah ah”). Anyway, I digress. I love our Australian beaches. They’re all so beautiful. From the gritty sand and perfect waves of Cronulla, the blindingly white sands of Vincentia and Huskisson, the deadly stingers of North Queensland (and the crocs of course) to the breathtaking beauty of Rainbow Beach. How I love our beaches. The surf, the sun, the sand. The smell of coconut tanning lotion.
I served my country in the ADF so I have an incredibly patriotic love for Australia. I love the freedom and peace we have here and the many opportunities to be whatever you want to be.
I love everything about Australia! Particularly the laid back culture and the amazing weather!
Happy Australia Day!! I love this Country, we Aussie’s just know how to have fun! 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway!
i love the people and their friendly laid back attitude. I also love our winters in North Queensland
Australia is the best country in the world, you only have to turn the news on to see why! I would never want to live anywhere else, despite the horrific bushfires and other acts of mother nature. I particularly love where I live…part of Newcastle, NSW,…life couldn’t get much better!
I really really want to visit Australia. I wish one day I will. From what saw in books about Australia or in television, Australia is a very beautiful country. That’s why I want to visit Australia.
Thanks for this giveaway and happy Australia day 🙂

What do I love (and hate) most about Australia? It has to be the language. We have created a whole new version of English here and while it drives me crazy at times, a person can’t help but feel just a little bit charmed by the turns-of-phrase and lingo we use in everyday speech.
I am so proud to be Austraaayan!
Love the diversity of people out here, so many cultures in this delicious pot of soup, full of different flavours and quirks that make our land the most special of all (to me, personally).
So have a wonderful Australia day to you all, and thanks for the giveaway Juliet! 🙂 x
I’d love to visit Australia because the weather seems great and the country looks beautiful!
Thanks for the giveaway!
Seeing I love the outdoors, I love Australia’s golden beaches, fascinating park-lands (with their intriguingly beautiful flora and fauna) and the friendly people who live here.
I love the fact that we live in a country where you can wear shorts in the middle of winter, and where you sing songs about dashing through the snow when it’s 40 degrees outside.
I love that you can drive for seven hours and not even have left the state you live in, and that a simple discussion about a sport no one else plays can take up an entire Friday afternoon…and most of Monday.
I love the amazing contrasts like the amazing beaches, the spectacular bush and the fact you can drive for hours and still be in the same state!
I love the beaches. Not necessarily the ones near me which aren’t that great but there are so many other fantastic locations around the country.
Thansk for the giveaway.
That’s it! I’m moving to Kiama 🙂 or at least, spending a few hours in Tarrin’s Bay.
Happy Australia Day, Juliet
The people. Its the people I think I like the most. You can travel so far (or so little depending on where you want to go) and the people are all so different. Bursting with different stories and usually quite friendly ready to lend a hand when needed. It never ceases to amaze me.
Happy Aussie day! Thanks for the giveaway too! I specifically want to visit Adelaide and Melbourne because my families are permanently residing there and I just want to see them. I would like to see Sorrento Beach too. :))
Happy Australi Day, hope you have a wonderful day! I would like to visit Austrlia so I can see the amazing and unique fiona and fauna. Thank you for the international giveaway 🙂
i would like to see the paysage, landscape and the wilderness
thank you a lot for this international giveaway

Happy Australia Day!
I would love to meet people from Australia and see the landscapes, climate and, especially the animals 🙂

I love Australia because your dreams can come true all you have to do is work hard and beleive in yourself.
I love the multiculturalism.
I’ve never been to Australia before. But, in my college I learned about Australia civilization and I was amazed with the landscape, history and the emblem(Kanggoro).
What I know Australia has a great barrier reef which is famous for diving. I’d love to go there one day. Don’t forget the famous hero, Nat.
Ohh I”m jealous you live by the sea. We have some great beaches here in Australia
Thanks for taking part in the Hop
I have seen pictures and it looks quite beautiful, would love to visit one day. Thanks.
Happy Australia Day! The weather and beaches are great here – loving the summer heat waves! 🙂
I love a lot about Australia, but I think my grandma sums it up best when she says, ‘I love Australia because it’s okay to do whatever I want’ (she was a immigrant post WWII after being forcibly taken from her family).
That weather over east last week was a shocker!
Thanks for the giveaway!
The opportunities and the freedom of choice
I’d love to visit Australia because the beaches look gorgeous and there’s so much cool wildlife 🙂

I’ve never been to Australia, but it’s a huge dream of mine to visit in the future. I’m mesmerized by this country and it’s really beautiful!
I love the people. I love how we step up in times of crisis & just all pitch in . It makes me so very proud.
I love the weather too! I live in Melbourne, and I firmly believe we have the best weather in Australia – it’s totally bonkers, of course, but it never stays the same way for long, which is invigorating (and also means you don’t get those long, draining spells of intense heat that more northerly cities go in for).
Thanks for the giveaway! I love the laid back culture, the beaches and SYDNEY. The weather not so much (I’m sooo a winter person and those 45 degree days have been killing me).
jessicamariesutton(at)msn(dot)com
i would love to visit the beach 🙂
The way we care & look out for each other, our mateship and of course our beautiful country 🙂
Ive always wanted to go to Sidney and see the Opera House.

I am not an Aussie, but I would like to check out the country which is home to various poisonous animals and insects yet the people live there with smile on their faces. Of course, I’ll be honest to include swimming.

After living overseas for almost a decade, there’s nothing quite like landing back in Australia to be embraced by the enormous sky and feeling of endless space. I can’t imagine raising a family anywhere else. Where else can you enjoy sparkling shiraz, the classic barbie and delicious pavlova on a summery day in January?
Thanks Juliet for the giveaway!
What I love about Australia is that we are all friendly to each other and that we have great weather. It maybe wet and windy at the moment but we get a great amount of sunshine and we get to spend more time in the outdoors than most other counties do
I love the open spaces we have, the friendliness of people, our honesty. Our wonderful and unique native animals (who else has anything like a platypus).
The totally chilled nature of everyone here 🙂
Juliet, what I love about Australia is that I live here. All the best, Joe Jeney
I know Kiama, used to go there when I lived in Oatley – Sydney. Lovely place. I live QLD now. Australia, is a lifestyle like not many other countries. I love the beach, the bbq’s year round, and we like to just hang. We can do that just about anywhere. Love how pretty places are . I love photography so I can always be found if my head isn’t in a book, it’s looking through a lens.
Lovely giveaway!!!
Michelle Thanks!
